COVID-19
THE COMMONWEALTH TIMES
When VCU and many U.S. colleges opted to online learning amid the coronavirus outbreak, the CT staff was devastated. For many, it was their last semester at the paper before graduating. We never considered stopping our coverage. If anything, we felt that students needed our coverage more than ever. Under my leadership, the news section transitioned from a weekly publication to consistent, remote coverage serving VCU students.
CAPITAL NEWS SERVICE
While learning from home, I continued to report for Capital News Service, a newswire service at VCU. Many of those articles examined how the virus was impacting Virginia residents, including children who lacked access to food during remote schooling.
103.7 Play
When on-air from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. on 103.7 Play, I served a completely different purpose. Instead of rushing to inform the public with the latest information, I was providing an escape. I laughed and joked about the craziness of the world, highlighted people in the community that inspired me, and provided a sense of hope.
Since March, I've also produced the station's morning show, Play Morning's with Melissa and Jack, so it can operate remotely from 6 to 9 a.m. The role has kept me busy – audio editing in VoxPro, soundboard operation and rundowns in WideOrbit.
